Main features
The main frame for each home is planned to be in timber, from well managed forests. However it could be built in other materials which meet the same low energy criteria. The homes will have an outer leaf of brick and timber boarding.
The ground floor has a through kitchen-diner and the south facing lounge on the first floor has a balcony. A sun space on the south side will assist with warming and clothes drying.
Two features help these homes be suitable for all generations; a w.c on the ground floor and provision for an internal lift if the owner wants one.
There's a full bathroom on each of the other floors. Buyers will be able to choose the position of some internal walls, to make bigger or smaller or even extra rooms where they want.
Primary water and space heating will be via a ground source heat pump extracting heat from deep in a borehole. The homes will be airtight so in winter heat can be recovered from the ventilation. On the roof there will be photovoltaic panels producing electricity.
Roof water will be filtered and recirculated for toilet flushing. Rain landing on roads and paving will percolate away naturally off site, not into drains.
